For over 30 years, Bullscroft has been primarily involved with agricultural crops, growing up to 100 acres .The traditional rotation was Barley, Barley, Wheat and Oil Seed Rape. Barley is the main crop, because it is dependable, and has fewer inputs in the form of fertiliser and weedkillers. In some years, the crop is the right quality for malting, and receives a premium. Wheat is profitable, but depends on good weather at harvest time. Oil Seed Rape is even more weather dependent. It can only be grown one year in four, due to the risk of disease build up. Prices fluctuate wildly, but the tendency is for them to reduce in real terms over the years, and it is likely that subsidies will also be reduced.
